A No Go for AG Cooper

In somewhat stunning political news, Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper announced that he will not run for governor in 2008. Cooper, who was elected AG in 2000, was thought to be among a the big three Democrat candidates looking to succeed incumbent Governor Mike Easley who is barred to seek re-election. Cooper will seek a third term as the state's AG.

With Cooper out of the gubenatorial race, the field is clear for Lt. Gov Bev Perdue and state Treasurer Richard Moore to square off in the Democratic primary. I have had the opportunity to see both officeholders speek on numerous occasions and have been impressed equally. This race promises to be an interesting political dance across the Tar Heel state as each try to win amongst the diverse consitituency within the Democratic Party.
