I think that we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg as far as the illegal immigration issue is concerned. Democrats need to be pro-immigration, but anti-illegal immigration. Unfortunately, a lot of our party leaders have already joined the "cheap labor lobby" with the big business Republicans.

As someone that owns a business in Mexico and maintains a home there I have to say that I am of the firm belief that our border with Mexico and Canada should be wide open with citizens free to work and shop where and when they please. The first part of the article quotes a gentleman that offers up the same old tired stereotypes and excuses bandied about in the 1800's and early 1900's about immigrants, basically they are different, different smells, different hygiene standards, Italians and Polish people didn't wash as often, their food was weird, they didn't assimilate well etc. etc.

America has always been a melting pot and I think we are richer for the many cultural differences immigrants bring us. By and large they are hardworking, respectful family loving folks looking to better their lives and the world as a result. As for the influx of children into our school system I think we need to take a long term look at the benefits that educating those kids will bring to our economy. They will be the biggest cheerleaders for democracy and this nation. They will bring innovation and if we nurture them and their families they will bring the hard working ethics and morals of their heritage. They are the future of America along with our children, not instead of our children. Tancredo and his ilk are using the politics of fear to denigrate these immigrants. They point to the Mexican driver that killed someone after 5 drunken driving convictions.....What the hell was this guy doing out driving after all those convictions? What broke down there was the judicial system not the immigration system. Fix that, go after the fools that released him back into the general population. Rather than punish employers that hire illegal immigrants why not legalize them and raise the minimum wage which has not been raised in 10 years for crying out loud. I say bring these people into the tax base, educate them to be the future of this country and point proudly to the inclusive nature of American values as a beacon and example to the rest of the world.
