Dionne's article on the future of the conservative movement. I suggested that the future of politics would be won by the party who incorporated the need for a government that protected its citizenry, without suffocating American inginuity and overstepping its boundaries in our lives. I cautioned Democrats in thinking the current problems voters are having with conservatives are a call to return to big government programs to solve the issues facing our nation. This post produced a couple of comments that I feel I must respond in order to clarify my beliefs of what the Democratic Party should advocate in the future.

First, I was asked in one post why I won't join the Republican Party. This question has been posed to me by many political sparring partners because I tend to take a less partisan viewpoint compared to most Democrats. However, I will not join the Republican Party because I disagree with the objectives of the GOP and feel there is a place for government to do good for the American people. I have felt Republicans often work to protect the wealthiest of Americans while turning their backs on the rest of the country.

That being said, the second post dealt with economic populism. There are some valid points to economic populism. I do not disagree with the need for protection of workers, investors, and consumers. We need to do all we can to make sure the nation we live is safe and secure from both domestic and foreign threats to the people of our country. This includes making sure work places are safe, investments are secure, pensions protected, our borders controlled, and those who wish to harm our people are kept in check.

However, to provide Americans with the security/protection advocated by those who want to return the party to an economic populist message, we do not need government redistribution programs that pit class between class. President Clinton's economic policies were successful at lifting more people out of poverty, creating the largest number of millionaires in our countries history, expanding the middle class for minorities, and increasing home ownership. He did this by using tax policy that encouraged growth (growth in which each class of people benefited). At the same time, decreasing the size of the federal government. The Bush Administration, nor any previous Presidential administration prior to Clinton can boast of such accomplishments.

I am tired of Democrats demonizing those who create wealth for themselves. Why is it wrong to study the market and invest in a company, work hard to build a business, or use your brainpower to invent/find a new cure to a disease or technological advancement? Sometimes I feel Democrats are against those who do this and unfortunately the electorate has felt the same. Clinton understood that all Americans aspire to live a good life and used government as a tool to provide opportunity to all Americans. He realized those who have achieved, should not be penalized for success, while advocating for the people working hard, trying to realize the American dream.

If Democrats want to be successful in the future, they must throw away the class warfare message and return to Clintonian rhetoric. Clinton made all people understand the importance of economic mobility for all classes. He was successful at making the wealthy buy into his beliefs of using government as a tool for economic prosperity. The wealthy benefited from Clinton's policies, as did most Americans.

Democrats have the opportunity to be the majority party in the United States. By forging a platform of issues that limits the scope of government while encouraging opportunity and responsibility in our ecomomic lives. Americans are tired of the old liberal ways of big government programs, yet are distrustful of conservative ideology that promises all will benefit from a rising tide. Democrats must find a new way that adapts to the 21st Century and the socio-economic realities of the information aged economy.

Evangelicals and Ohio Politics

When people ask me why Ohio went to the Republican side in 2004 I often say, "Ohio is the most southern state above the Mason-Dixon line." Having traveled across the Buckeye state and participated in the political process, I am amazed at how similar Ohio is to many parts of the south, especially North Carolina.

The Ohio State University has done an excellent report on the state or religion and politics in the Buckeye state. I found the study fascinating as conservatives built themselves into a hardened political voting block that helped to elect Republican presidencies and congresses. So when I awoke and read The Washington Post this morning, I was very interested in a column on the future of conservatism in American politics.

In today's Washington Post, political columnist E.J.Dionne questions the future of conservatism as a political force in the United States. Dionne distinguishes the fragile link between social conservatives and libertarians who have worked in unison to dominate the political scene for the past forty years.

In this article, Dionne notes recent developments that have brought the conservative movement to the brink of fragmentation. Run-away spending, stem cell research, and the war in Iraq have worked to divide social and libertarian conservatives in a way similar to the split seen in the 1992 Presidential election, the last time a schism within conservative circles gave way to massive Democratic gains across the United States.

It is in the final piece of the article that I want to dedicate my comments. Dionne argues that political movements suffer and decline when they lose self-confidence. Liberalism crumbled as an electoral coaltition after the 1968 election. With the fall of the liberal order, conservatives forged a coalition of voters between southern Democrats, midwestern union workers, and business friendly groups and enacted systematic changes to New Deal programs at all levels of government.

As Dionne argues, the decline of conservatism leaves a vaccum in American politics. I caution Democrats who may feel this vaccum can be absorbed by shifting existing policies to big-government sollutions. Each political shift is defined by the socio-economic condition of the country. The progressive shift after the Great Depression reflected the need for an activist government. The post-1968 conservative shift reflected the nation's concern of the counterculture, high taxes, and government social engineering.

Today, our country is defined by the information aged economy. People create wealth through their own ingenuity. I believe the vaccum described by Dionne will be filled by the party who understands that Americans need a government who protects them from the evils of big business and big government, provides security to domestic and foreign enemies, and promotes entreprenurial growth. The next political movement will be won by the party who can offer pension protections, personal information protections, a real national security plan, a new approach to helath care, incentives for technological innovations, and encourages investments (both public and private) in our countries businesses and neighborhoods.

Both parties have an opportunity to forge a new coalition. The party who can shake the grip of existing special interests to write a new platform of ideas will be the party that governs in the future.

I have included a link to Dionne's column below. Click on it to read more.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/03/AR2006080301259.html

National Dems repositioning strategy on Iraq War

Are national Democrats rethinking their stance on immediate pullout of troops from Iraq? By offering mutual support between the two nations, Chavez, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, represent an alarming coalition that could destablize the world economy. Both nations hold their vast amounts of oil over the heads of the industrialized world. Any collaberation between these nations could send oil prices beyond the recent record highs.

I have been a strong supporter of the War on Terrorism and feel it is a vital to the national interest of the United States. However, during the past three weeks as the situtation in the Middle East has bordered on regional war, I have come to the conclusion that the War in Iraq has left Iran the only major power in the region. The toppling of Saddam Husseing removed the only check on Iranian aggression in the Middle East and has created the insurgent mess in Iraq, as well as, the hostile rebirth of Hammas.

Iran is now looking to forge alliances with nations outside the Middle East. Venezuela is a perfect fit because its President has been in open rebellion against US policy for years. The new partnership is a win-win for both countries and provides further headache to the Bush Administration on the foreign policy front. The new coalition allows Chavez, who aims to assert more influence in South American politics, a chip in gaining respect from his neighbors.

Our country, and world, is in the most precarious state since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The United States has no foreign policy plan to deal with the ever changing situation across the globe. Condeleeza Rice is the most incompetent Secretary of State this nation has had, even outdoing Madalyn Albright. Each day, world affairs take a course that is not in the interest of our country with no response or proactive agenda from the administration.

If America was a parliamentary form of government, the 2006 elections would be a chance for change in the foreign policy apparatus. Unfortunately, a change in foreign policy will come only with the innauguration of a new President in 2008. If Bush was smart, he would remove his foriegn policy team and replace them with a proven expert who has respect. George Mitchell would be a good choice!

Christensen Column on NC Reforms

http://www.newsobserver.com/114/story/465972.html

Why Cities can no longer Carry Democrats to Victory

If I have learned anything since I moved south, it is that Democrats must win rural and exurban voters to carry themselves to victory. North Carolina politics eptimizes this principle. There are high growth urban and suburban areas that contain native Tar Heel born residents mixed with many transplants from across the country. In the rural areas of the state there are mostly native born Tar Heel voters. I have been lucky to live in both environments while teaching here in the Tar Heel state, and have found that centrist language and politics appeals to voters across the state.

Nationally, the cities are losing people to exurban and rural areas of our country. Three and a half months before Election Day, the
poll shows little to no movement on some key barometers, suggesting that barring
some major unforeseen event, an ominous framework for Republicans is locking in.
But perhaps even more problematic for the GOP is that the striking degree of
pessimism Americans express about the future, as reflected in the poll, is being
driven largely by the war in Iraq and by the Bush Administration itself, both of
which will extend beyond November.

The public's estimation of President Bush, Congress, and the two parties hasn't
moved much. In this latest poll, taken from July 21-24, Bush's job approval
rating is 39%, a bump of two points since our June survey, but continuing his
nearly year-long streak below 40%. Congress' job approval rating is 25%, also
up two points since June, but still well below their high this year of 33%.
Those surveyed say they'd prefer a Democrat-run Congress over a Republican-run
Congress by 10 points -- about the average margin in our poll this year. The
percentages of people who say their vote is meant to send a signal of support
for Bush and a signal of opposition to Bush remains unchanged since last month.
And in two different versions of the same question, almost exactly the same
percentages say they are more concerned that Republicans will retain control of
Congress and there won't be enough change than they are concerned that Democrats
will win control of Congress and there will be too much.

By this point in the election cycle, Republicans will find it "pretty hard to
change the dynamic," NBC/Journal co-pollster Peter Hart (D) said, "especially
when you consider that the last five weeks have been aimed at changing the
dynamics." During that time, the GOP levied its "cut and run" onslaught against
Democrats over Iraq; House Republicans stood up to Bush and their Senate
colleagues to demand that border security be addressed before a new guest-worker
plan; and the party leadership held a series of votes on social issues that were
intended to inspire their base. "The events that happen on the front page count
a lot more than the events that happen on the political page," Hart suggested.

For more: The latest edition of First Read is available now at
http://www.FirstRead.MSNBC.com !

Democratic Leadership Council Announces American Dream Initiative

Meeting in Denver, Colorado this past weekend, the Democratic Leadership Council announced the American Dream Initiative (ADI). The ADI is a comprehensive plan to save the American Dream for Middle Class Americans and is written by DLC members SenatorHillary Clinton, Senator Tom Caper, and Governor Tom Vilsack. Each side has dug in and is prepared to take the next step that may lead to an all out war in this modern day powderkeg. War in the Middle East would put United States soldiers in Iraq in the middle of a crisis which has no clear cut end. This situation is so dangerous that we may be witnessing the dawning of World War III.

Throughout the week, I have watched as the Bush Administration, and its incompetent Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice, fumbled the ball on dealing with the situation. The administration appears to be at a loss for plans on how to end this crisis peacefully. It is because of the administration's lack of a foreign policy strategy that I write this blog in hope that someone influential will read it and give my suggestion to the President.

If President Bush wants to be a leader and end the current Middle East crisis, he should put partisianship aside and ask former President Bill Clinton to be a personal envoy to the region in hope of negotiating a peace. President Clinton is the only person in the world who can bring the parties together and hammer out an aggreement. Clinton has the missing link that the Bush Administration lacks, the respect of the world community, and could barter a peace before the situation evolves past the point of no return.

So I say to President Bush, be "a uniter not a divider" and call on President Clinton to help the United States and the world out in this hour of darkness. The history books will write highly of you.

In Defense of Israel

As I write this post bombing raids continue to reck havoc on the Middle East. The current conflict between Israel, Hammas, and Hezbolah threatens to start a regional war and the United States finds itself having to deal with yet another foreign policy nightmare that could destabalize a region of the world that does not need much to trigger a major explosion.

I have been a strong advocate for the country of Israel throughout my political life. Israel has been a stable democracy for the past 60 years in a region wih no history of democratic tradition. Israel has rarely provoked attacks from its Arab neighbors, but has defended itself when pushed to do so. When asked to negotiate with its neighbors, Israel has always came to the table and concedced points in exchange for peace.

Most recently, Israel has given up territory to the Palestinians and allowed for them to have their own elections. When given this opportunity, the Palestinians elected a regional terror organization to control the government.

I feel the people of Israel should be commended in their efforts to seek peace with Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world. Peace is attainable in this region, Egypt, Jordan, and Israel have proven this point. However, when dealing with the Palestinians and other Arab nations, the Israelis have attempted to give concessions, only to be faced with situations like the present. This being said, it is understandable why Israel has reacted by using military force to deal with current affairs that threaten their soveriegnty. Israel has every right to defend itself from those who wish to eradicate it from the face of the Earth.

Hammas and Hezbolah receive much of their funding and support from Iran and Syria. These two nations are a serious problem in the Middle East. Each is an enemy of freedom and they both wish to spread Islamic Fascism around the world.

I am troubled by the response of the United Nations and Old Europe towards Israel considering the current situtation was spurred by terrorists groups with the backing of Syria and Iran. When you factor into the equasion that Iran is seeking the development of nuclear weapons, the nation thumbs its nose at the world when asked to negotiate about its nuclear development, and its President Ahmadinejad has stated on numerous occasions he would like to see Israel destroyed, how can any group (the UN and Old Europe) falt Israel in its actions?

I pray that a sollution can be arrived at that will stop the violence from erupting into a full scale regional war. But with nations like Iran and Syria holding influence, past history shows little hope for a peaceful outcome.

Palmetto State Gubenatorial Election Update

The State newspaper details the race for the governorship of South Carolina. Cooper, who was elected AG in 2000, was thought to be among a the big three Democrat candidates looking to succeed incumbent Governor Mike Easley who is barred to seek re-election. Cooper will seek a third term as the state's AG.

With Cooper out of the gubenatorial race, the field is clear for Lt. Gov Bev Perdue and state Treasurer Richard Moore to square off in the Democratic primary. I have had the opportunity to see both officeholders speek on numerous occasions and have been impressed equally. As the minimum wage has remained the same, prices for goods and services (food, gas, childcare, etc.) have skyrocketed to their highest levels in history, making it difficult for American families to make ends meet. Congress has failed to deal with this causing many states to pass minimum wage increases within their state assemblies.

In the current session of the North Carolina General Assembly legislatures passed a 19 billion dollar budget that brought wage increases for teachers and state employees. I believe the budget passed by the legislature to be a very good piece of public policy that specifically dealt with needs facing the Tar Heel State minus one important group, the working poor.

There was debate over raising the minimum wage to $6.15 per hour. State Treasure Richard Moore pushed hard for this legislation. Raising the minimum wage isnt just an economic decision, but is a moral decision that defines a society's value of work and responsibility. It is inconceivable that our state should allow those who work 40 hours per week to earn a paycheck that doesn't raise them above the poverty level.

Despite all the attacks from business and conservative groups on the negative effects of raising the minimum wage, research shows that minimum wage increases benefit the economy. When low-wage workers have more money they spend money in their communities. This generates extra revenues for private business allowing them to higher more workers.

A minimum wage increase is overdue at the national level, but because of the reckless disregard in understanding the lives of working families by Republicans in Congress, states are having to act. I call for the NC legislature to make one more good policy decision before ending the legislative session. Pass a minimum wage increase for Tar Heel workers and families.

http://www.ncfairwages.org/index.htm

DLC names Governor Mike Easley "New Dem of the Week

North Carolina Governor Mike Easley was named New Dem of the Week by the Democratic Leadership Council. Today we reflect upon our rich heritage and praise the accomplishments of our republican experiment that began with the Decleration of Independence in 1776.

An advantage of being a public school teacher is having the summer to partake in relaxation. I use my summers to read and further my understanding of the country we live. It is fitting that I am reading 1776, by David McCullough. I know this book has been out for some time, and I feel horrible that I am now just reading it, but I am finding it to be fascinating and informative.

1776 puts in perspective the mindset of our Founding Fathers as they pledged their lives to the betterment of society. The ideals of the Enlightenment Period, freedom from tyranny, individual responsibilty, and government of the people were the bedrock the Founders used in the creation of this republic. The Founding Fathers understood they were making history by revolting against the established ways of the world. Their courage would lead to the defeat of the greatest empire and spark revolutions against monarchies across Europe, most notably France some ten years later.

The ideals of the Founding Fathers have allowed for debate and the evolution of our country. Today, Americans find themselves discussing issues rooted in the ideals that have shaped this country and whether we should export them to other parts of the world. I anticipate this discussion will last for another 230 years.

I wish y'all a Happy Fourth of July. May you enjoy the freedoms you have and give thanks to those who have made them possible.

Losing Faith in Joe Lieberman

I have stirred all day long about what to post on the big Democratic issue of the day. This may be th hardest post I have sat down to write because of my strong defense of former Vice-Presidential nominee Joe Lieberman. After debating with Democratic activists on my belief that Democrats need to keep Joe Lieberman in the United States Senate, the Connecticut Senator announced that he is allowing signatures to be collected that would put him on the ballot as an Independent should he lose the Democratic primary. Oh Joe! You have gone too far on this one and made yourself, and your supporters, look pretty damn stupid!

If you believe in democracy and open-ballot primaries, then you must accept there will be challenges from people representing diverse concerns. I have said in my previous posts that I do not believe Lieberman should be voted out because of a single issue, but in a democratic system that allows issues to be debated, that possibility is always there. It is the nature of our system, and one I would not dare to advocate changing.

Joe Lieberman's actions today are unacceptable. I find it silly to think Lieberman, who stated today he is a Democrat, would turn his back on his party. If voters in the Connecticut Democratic Primary choose Lieberman's opponent, the honorable course to take would be to endorse the party's nominee. That is how democratic primaries work Joe!

I now do not care if Joe Lieberman loses the nomination. I no longer have faith in him as a spokesperson for my party. I held him in high regard until today's announcement, but now realize he is less committed to the party than once thought.
<img width='1' height='1' This privately and local owned bookstore has a great collection for readers of all types of books. I highly recommend those of you in the Triangle check this place out.

While shopping for my July reading, I came across a book that every Democrat should read. Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate--The Essential Guide for Progressives, is written by University of California at Berkley Linguistics professor George Lakoff. This book provides key insight into message delivery and the "framing" of political issues.

In this masterpiece of political communication theory, Lakoff describes how conservatives and Republicans have been successful at setting the message agenda at all levels of government, forcing Democrats to compete on enemy turf by adopting the rhetoric of our opponents. The author also lays out the history behind the conservative's unifying of messages to suit all coalitions and how progressives have failed to taylor their message to provide a cohesive voting bloc.

This great little book is 115 pages and can be purchased at Quail Ridge for $10.00. I gurantee this book is the best $10.00 you will spend on any political literature and hope that all Democratic candidates, operatives, and activists will read before the fall campaign heats up.

I finished it in one day and will carry it with me to refresh myself upon its guiding principles. I would encourage all to attend the discussion on this book at Quail Ridge Book Store on July 16, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. I will include a link below for y'all to view. You can also purchase your copy by clicking on this link.

http://quailridgebooks.booksense.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp?s=storeevents&eventId=325653

Gingrich Challenges Edwards to Poverty Debate

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was in Raleigh this past week and challenged Senator John Edwards to a debate on poverty. It seems that many have a problem with Senator Lieberman's strong stance on the Iraq War and would like to see him defeated in the primary by an anti-war Democrat.

In the 1955 book Profiles in Courage, then Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts wrote of men who risked their political futures to stand upon their principles. If Joe Lieberman were alive at that time, his stance would be in this book.

I am disturbed of the factionalization of the war issue within the Democratic Party. I have always believed the Democratic Party to be the true "big tent" party allowing for diversity in opinion. I am fearful, if Lieberman loses in the Democratic Party, that factions will employ litmus tests to candidates pushing our party further from the mainstream of the American electorate.

I ask the anti-war, Daily Kos faction, who are targetting Lieberman for defeat, why aren't you targetting Teddy Kennedy for defeat? He was close to President Bush in passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, which incidentally is ruining American education. Why aren't you targetting Democrats who voted for Bush's tax cut package? It is putting a huge burden on people my age because of the deficits being created? The decision to challenge a sitting incumbent because of a single issue is hogwash and threatens the stability of our party.

Joe Lieberman has proven himself to be an able represnetative for the people of Connecticut. He has an impecable record on women's issues, is a supporter of civil liberties, and has voted for labor issues consistantly. When viewing his voting record, one will find that his Democratic credentials are strong.

Lieberman is one of the few statesman in our party. He is someone who can cross party lines and get issues resolved. The loss of Lieberman in the Senate would be great.

I hope the people of Connecticut will see through this ploy of the left and give Joe Lieberman the primary victory he deserves.

Interesting article on the new Cold War found in The Nation

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060710/cohen

North Carolina's Child Poverty Rate Increases

In perhaps the saddest story in the current state of affairs in North Carolina, the Annie E. In a speech this week, Republican nominee J. Kenneth Blackwell, made comments regarding the Democratic Party and religion. In the speech, Blackwell stated, ``Democrats still believe that government is God, and God is not.'' This language is unacceptable and I hope that the people of Ohio reject such talk at the ballot box in November.

Before I was involved in politics, I was a churchgoer. My Catholic faith was instilled to me by my family and I rarely use it for political purposes. I am tired of the Republican Party using religion as a vote mechanism and painting Democrats as a Godless group of people.

I ask Republican Party officials a few simple questions and hope they will refference their Bibles for the answers:

1. Is it moral to allow 1 of 5 children to live in poverty?
2. Is it moral to live in the richest nation in the world and have people go without healthcare?
3. Is it moral to pollute the environment and ruin the planet that GOD created for his children?
4. Is it moral to spend the country into debt beyond repair and pass it along to the next generation of leaders?
5. Is it moral to Judge another's beliefs without examining one's own beliefs?
6. Is it moral to discriminate because of a person's race, color, sex, or sexual orientation?

Reading articles about politicians who use religion against my party makes my blood boil. I have met thousands of Democrats who are churchgoing. They are wonderful people living the life God has planned for them.

In a previous post, I referenced a political candidate from North Carolina, Vernon Robinson. Ken Blackwell and Vernon Robinson are two of a kind. They claim to love America, but truly hate the people who call America home. In my christian faith, that is wrong because Jesus teaches us to love each other as Children of God.

I hope we as Democrats can begin to stand up to this Christian bigotry that many candidates on the right use to divide our party and the electorate. It is time to stick our thumbs into the eyes of candidates like Robinson and Blackwell (Old Testament Style!!!) The time to be timid is over. Let's take our gloves off and start punching back.

http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/14866814.htm

Washington Times Political Commentary

The Washington Times does not believe Democrats will win in 2006 and 2008. He has ran for numerous offices without luck, and reminds me of the perenial B52 candidate, always looking to drop the political bombshell.

His advertising is racist, homophobic, and makes former Senator Jesse Helms appear worthy of sainthood. Besides the advertising, it is appaling that Vernon Robinson is running for Congress to represent a district he does not call home. Add it all up, and it is easy to conclude that Vernon Robinson brings out the worst in politics.

When faced with such candidates, responsible political parties take steps to shield themselves from bigotry and stupidity. I am disappointed at the lack of words from the North Carolina State Republican Party denouncing Robinson's campaign advertising. Does anyone remember the 2000 GOP National Convention where the theme was tolerance? I guess the silence from the state GOP is code for intoloerance towards immigrants and gays?

This past week, the campaign of Vernon Robinson was reported upon in the News and Observer. I have included a link below for you to read.

http://dwb.newsobserver.com/politics/ncwire_politics/story/2966743p-9400886c.html

Attacking North Korea, a Dangerous Proposal

In yesterday's blog entries I included a link to an Op-Ed piece found in The Washington Post. The piece dealt with the possibilities of attacking North Korea's missile on the launch pad before it is tested. The piece was authored by two former Clinton defense officials, William Perry and Ashton Carter.

After reading and digesting the arguments put forth in this piece, I have concluded to attack North Korea would be a dangerous military venture that could distabalize global politics. The reaction in the world community to another unilateral strike by the United States at a sovereign country is an unknown factor in this debate.

The Op-Ed piece offers that the U.S. should make clear that South Korea would have no role in this attack. It says that Japan would welcome the bold move on the part of the United States, bringing our two nations closer. The most unpredictable conclusion made in this piece is that Russia and China would give the U.S. a pass on this action because of the failure of the Six Party Talks to reslove nuclear issues surrounding North Korea.

I am not a foreign policy export, yet I do believe the North Koreans are practicing a bit of global "wedge" politics. By threatening to test a missle capable of delivering nuclear war heads to the United States, the North Koreans are challenging the bravado of the Bush Administration's Preemptive Doctrine. It is no secret, the nations involved in the Six Party talks have a vested interest in keeping North Korea in check. Attacking North Korea unilaterally would shatter any hope of a diplomatic sollution and would bring the world into a second Cold War.

Ralph Reed and Jack Abramoff

The New York Times is reporting that former Chrisitian Coalition leader and candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia Ralph Reed was a key figure in the lobbying activities of Jack Abramoff. Appearing on Hard Ball with Chris Matthews this past Tuesday evening, Shrum portrayed Democrats as a weak at the knees party, afraid to see the war effort to completion. His analysis of current policy, failing to acknowledge any progress, was steeped in Vietnam era rhetoric going as far as to predict our troops will be rescued from the Green Zone in Baghdad as our embassy was evacuated in Saigon in 1975.

I am amazed at the need of Shrum, and many other Democrats, to liken the War on Terrorism to Vietnam. The comparisons are few, if any, and strategy in the War on Terrorism is committed to winning.

I am tired of seeing Bob Shrum speak for my party on national/international issues. His record in Presidential elections is horrific and I see his opinion to be painting the wrong image of the Democratic Party. Shrum had his chance to speak as strategist for the Gore campaign in 2000 and the Kerry campaign in 2004. His retro-80's political campaign strategy has failed two candidates, and it is now time time that Democrats sideline Shrum in the national debate.

http://www.slate.com/?id=2065586

Tough Talk from former Clinton Defense Chiefs

Former Secretary of Defense William Perry and former Assistant Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter have authored an Op-Ed piece in today's Washington Post dealing with the threat of North Korea to test a missle capable of delivering a nuclear war head to the mainland of the United States. Experiencing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals is a memory I will take with me for the rest of my life. The fans were loud and appreciative of the sacrafices being played out on the ice at the RBC Center in Raleigh. This past hockey season, working as a bartender at the RBC Center, was wonderful and I already miss not having another game to look forward to.

Growing up in the Cleveland Media Market, I was raised a Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers fan. The three teams combined have experienced heartbreaking losses (The Drive, The Fumble, Michael Jordan's last second shot, and Jose Mesa's blown save in the 1997 World Series) that still bring grown men to tears. I remember crying my eyes out as the Browns lost to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game two years strait.

Having your team take you to the brink of victory was a norm of growing up a Cleveland professional sports team fan, and after the losing games 5 and 6, one I worried was happening again as a Carolina Hurricanes fan. However, it was meant to be for the Canes!

Thank you Canes for one hell of a season!!!

President nets $27 Million for GOP

President Bush attended a Washington fundraiser filling the GOP's political war chest with an additional $27 million dollars. I watched this announcement live, and new immediately this was the candidate I wanted to support and work for in the 2004 Democratic primaries.

I first heard of John Edwards in 1998 while reading an article in the Washington Post about his challenge to incumbnet Senator Lauche Faircloth. After his election to the Senate, I followed Edwards and was impressed with his star power. I saw him as the next generation of Democratic politicians who could build upon the successes of the "Clinton-way" of presidential campaigning.

Like many Democrats, I ignored Senator Edwards' lack of political experience because I believed him to be the only candidate capable of defeating President Bush. The senator's resume turned out to be a political liability after the South Carolina primary in 2004, paving the way for John Kerry to win the nomination.

Since the primary and general election defeat of 2004, Edwards has worked to bolster his political credentials. He has co-written a report with former HUD secretary Jack Kemp for the Council on Foreign Relations regarding U.S. relations with Russia. He has made numerous trips abroad, including a recent visit to Israel. He also has expanded his work to fight poverty, an issue Edwards believes will determine America's future.

Edwards' has quietly worked to make himself a credible candidate in 2008. His name ID is strong amongst the American public, and Democrats have a very favorable view of him. With potential candidates Hillary Clinton and Al Gore having high negatives amongst the public, Edwards may be the alternative candidate who can forge party unity and still win the general election.

Is Edwards the new comeback kid? Only time will answer this question, but any observer of politics must admit that Edwards has made himself into a candidate who must not be overlooked.

http://oneamericacommittee.com/

Senator John Edwards polling strong in Iowa

The Des Moines Register is reporting that former Senator John Edwards leads potential Iowa Caucus voters with 30% support of those polled. The President returned to old themes on the Iraq War, while adding a new message to the fold, not to play politics with the battlefield. The President appeared to be confident in the long-term progress being made in Iraq, and rejected a time table to withdraw troops.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with a soldier who returned from Iraq. This soldier assured me that things are better in Iraq than what we see each night on television. The soldier told me stories of being greeted in the streets by the Iraqi people and stated that we are getting the job done.

I have been a supporter of the Iraq War and War on Terrorism from the beginning. I applaud the President for staying the course in Iraq. I am reposting remarks I made back in December to this very issue because I think they are appropriate to this discussion.

Posted December 19, 2005 by Blue Dog
I know this posting will make some of my Democratic friends uneasy, but those who know me best understand that I have been a supporter of the Bush Administration's War on Terror since the early hours of September 11, 2001.

I have always believed that politics needs to end at our countires waters. I am not ashamed of my wholehearted support of President Bush's decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq; positions that were unpopular with many in my party. I still believe I was correct in my support for President Bush and would do the same if the clock was turned back.

In last nights speech to the nation, President Bush made the most compelling arguments to date for America's committment to staying the course in Iraq and winning the "big picture" in the War on Terrorism. War is not pretty. The images shown on our TV screens at night are gruesome and do affect the moral of the American people. We must not foreget that in our countries previous wars, men have died.Would the outcome of World War II be different now if TV screens were prominent in every American household? Would people question the resolve of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to defeat the Evil Axis of Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy, and Tojo's Japan? It makes you wonder!

Our country is persuing the correct policy in the Middle East. Democratic nations do not fight each other. A free Iraq will eventually lead to a peaceful Middle East as people are awakened to the freedoms accustomed with democracy. Other nations in the region will, and some currently are, (Egypt and Lebanon come to mind), be forced to deal with their own tyrannical and oppressive governments. By spreading freedom in this region, our enemies will have no base of operation to launch attacks on western governments.

Our fighting men and women are doing a hell-of-a-job in Iraq. We must honor the sacrafices they are making in this struggle between good and evil. To quit now would dishonor the men and women who have given their lives to this cause of freedom, and embolden the terrorists to attack us in the future.
The Right doesn;t get Education

Individuals who have never stepped into a public school classroom never fail to amaze me. Their ideological viewpoint of the myths in education are simplistic to the point of laughter. As I was surfing the web tonight for aticles to post, I ran across an article from the American Enterprise Institute dealing with the state of public schools in the United States. The article identifies myths of public schools and how they are hurting the reform movement of our education system.

Reading this article allowed me the opportunity to reflect upon the right's utter misunderstanding of education in our country. Despite his views on immigration, I find Congressman J.D. Hayworth to be a respectable gentleman with true convictions. I respect his beliefs and believe he and I would have a great discussion about the future of our country.

The article, which I link below, discusses the new politics that is forming in Hayworth's state of Arizona. The politics in Arizona are moving to the center, leaving once-safe conservatives like Hayworth vulnerable. I have argued on this blog the need for Democrats to present a centrist message to voters. This article provides validity to my calls for moderation in the party.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/11/AR2006061100776.html

Commentary from the News and Observer

The weekly column of News and Observer political reporter Rob Christensen focuses on President Bush. The 2006 elections in Ohio are vital to both parties as the path to the White House in 2008 will role across the Ohio landscape. For Democrats, this election cycle in Ohio may be the most important in 50 years, with the Republicans appearing to be as weak electorally then any other time in the state's history. To fail to capitalize on this opportunity will only guarantee Republican rule in the state for the foreseeable future.

Read the article from the Columbus Dispatch.

http://www.dispatch.com/?story=dispatch/2006/06/04/20060604-C1-02.html

Republicans See Black as Political Gold

The Raleigh News and Observer reports on North Carolina Republicans use of Speaker Jim Black as a rallying figure for the general election.
